Hummingbird Tapestry Looms evolved to fill a need. The tapestry looms I purchased lacked several key features: retractable legs, interchangeable powder coated angulated combs, the ability to weave in a continuous fashion akin to a copper loom, and a smooth wood bottom surface to sit on a table. Plus, I wanted my loom made of beautifully finished wood. To summarize, I wanted form, function, and beauty combined into one tapestry loom.

I started my love affair with fiber after retirement. Now knitting and tapestry weaving are my creative passions. My husband, Erik, is a skilled wood worker and now that he has more time, he enjoys creating beautiful and functional items from wood. The loom structure is based on the copper loom designed by Archie Brennan. The horizontal bars are made of polished maple or cherry wood and are designed to be four inches longer than the weavable space. This provides 2 inches on either side of the weaving space for the vertical support rods and retractable legs, preventing them from interfering with weaving. Two threaded stainless-steel rods control the vertical weaving height and hold retractable wooden legs. Powder coated combs are slightly bent for easier warping and create a four-selvedge weaving space. The combs can also be easily removed to allow a continuous circular warp around the horizontal bars. The combs are fastened using machine screws in threaded brass inserts that won’t wear out and makes changing the combs easy.

A loom can be made to order in several ways. Weavable width, height, and comb dent choices are standard ordering options. Additionally, we can further customize any loom order with alternative wood choices and will try to accommodate any other specific design alternatives. Each loom is made to order in the USA.

Hummingbird looms are unique. Each loom ordered is made to the specifications of the artist or group ordering multiple looms. My guild ordered a group of Hummingbird looms for our Education Department. They are sturdy, functional, and beautiful. I own two Hummingbird looms and they are a pleasure to use.

I own two of these tapestry looms (the 8″ and the 16″) and I am about to order a third. I find them to be not only a pleasure to use but they are beautiful as well. These looms are extremely well designed and take into consideration all of the needs of the weaver. . . two different ways of warping, changeable combs for different setts, moveable legs that allow you to change the angle of the loom for warping and weaving, sizes that are very portable for workshops etc. and a selection of beautiful woods to choose from. Every detail has been considered.
